My name is Andrew Lockhart and I grew up in Coatbridge, Scotland. I studied at Glasgow University. After spending three decades in planning, statistics and international sales and marketing, I am now an author, family historian and owner of Magda Green Books. Apart from writing (and reading great books) and blogging, my other interests are science, music of all sorts, and traveling the world.

The Dispossessed

"But the loss of -- of everything feminine -- of delicacy -- and the loss of masculine self-respect -- You can't pretend, surely, in your work, that women are your equals? In physics, in mathematics, in the intellect? You can't pretend …

[This is the third extract from my historical romance, The Tiger and the Cauldron, available now as an e-book on Amazon worldwide.] Terror gripped Doquz. Melik and Jahan held her so tightly she could hardly move. They dragged her to the stables, kicked the door open and threw her down roughly, forcing the breath from …

The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer A Review What does a writer do after hitting the jackpot? Well, in this case, she does something new. After taking the teen market by storm in the mid noughties, scooping awards and breaking records (and dawn) with both books and film adaptations of her Twilight Saga, Stephenie Meyer has …

[continuing yesterday's extract from my historical romance The Tiger and the Cauldron] ***** “So soon, Hassan?” Hassan faced his mother across the room. Her eyes were pleading. He felt his small sister tugging at his tunic, trying to lead him off for yet another game in the garden. Her brother too had transferred his allegiance …

Nadia's Dream

On March 10, 2017 By Andrew G LockhartIn Books, Historical Fiction, the Mongols1 Comment

Since I haven't posted any extracts from my own fiction for a while, I decided today it was time I did so again. This chapter is a taster (hopefully) from my story The Tiger and the Cauldron, set in the late 13th century in Italy and the Mongol Empire: Nadia supposed at first it was …

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier The author Sally Beauman, who has published her own novel based on Rebecca [Rebecca's Tale], writes that du Maurier began her story at the end. In a sense that is true, but those first two chapters give no real clue to what is to come. Rebecca is a novel you …

The Millennium Bug

On March 4, 2017 By Andrew G LockhartIn poetry8 Comments

I was going through my folders the other day with a view to trashing really old files when I came across this poem. It's just something I wrote on the eve of the new millennium 17 years ago. Of course, it's rather out of date now but as I had a lot of fun writing …

Review Schrödinger's Kittens by John Gribbin 'The special theory of relativity tells us that it is impossible to run alongside a beam of light at the same speed the light is moving; relative to some chosen inertial frame, you can in principle get your own velocity up as close to the speed of light as …

On The Wild Side

On February 11, 2017 By Andrew G LockhartIn Books, Historical Fiction5 Comments

Having recently spent a few days on the open roads of the Wild West *, I thought I might stay on it for a few days more and recall two classic novels set during the pioneering days in North America. This is an edited version of an article entitled A Dog's Life which I posted …
