Romanticised through the work of Charles Kingsley, Hypatia of Alexandria was one such woman who is brought alive in two biographies of the past twenty years by writers with very different approaches to her life and work. Somewhat confusingly, both have the same eponymous title.

Andrew:
Great post. I saw an interesting movie about her recently. It is called “Agora” and came out in 2009. It stars Rachel Weisz as Hypatia. From what I can remember it seems to follow your description of her biography pretty closely. I was fascinated by it as I knew very little of her life story from my previous reading. If you can find it I would be interested to see how accurate you think it is. Cheers.

I mentioned the film in the post [but I guess it was too well hidden]. I enjoyed the film except that (typically of the movie industry) it condensed the time frame to suit the attractive Ms Weisz. That is, they followed the legend of ‘the beautiful YOUNG mathematician/philosopher.’
